Since when did a nice gesture no longer become just a nice gesture? I had to stop at a gas station after dance practice, and I noticed a rose seller was set up, trying to move his leftover Valentine's Day bouquets. In the midst of watching the numbers slowly click upwards, someone approached me and said "Excuse me, ma'am" (we'll overlook that misstep). I look up and it's the rose seller, with a single red rose in his hand. "This is for you, Happy Valentine's Day, " he said, and then left me to finish filling my tank. I thanked him, surprised and touched by the gesture, but then my mind automatically went to the credit card in my pocket, even as far as to wonder if there was a gps bug in the rose and he would rob my house later. That's how crazy far my mind went!
But no, there was no bug, my credit card was safely in my pocket still, it was simply a kind gesture. So why did I automatically assume there was some scam or evil plot behind it? Granted, the last time a rose seller gave me a flower, he chased after Sean and I demanding payment (we had clearly explained to him when he first tried pushing it into my hand that we didn't have money). But this is what the world has come to...where so many "good deeds" are merely scams or opportunities for pick pockets or con men, that we can't trust any one who is just trying to do a nice thing.
So to the rose seller, thank you...and I'm sorry for neurotically misjudging your sweet gesture.
