Community gardening is very similar to community theater...you have an interest and very little knowledge or training when you begin, and as you work hard at it, one of two things happen: 1) you flourish in your new found and home grown talent, or 2) you fail miserably in front of many people.
In this instance, community theater has led me to this gardening venture. Theater friends of mine decided to join up with a few other families to create a community garden to aid some people who are suffering from the recession. Three of the five familes backed out, which left a lot of land (see below) and not many hands to work it. So I decided to lend a hand in order to gain some experience and knowledge.
We showed up to face the vast, tilled ground, with a small box of seedlings.
I was merely expecting to lend a hand, but they presented me with a large section of land and asked me what I wanted to plant. My mind drew a blank, so I decided to try digging up the soil first while I mulled it over. It would give me ample time with my thoughts. Before my hoe had sliced into the earth, they pulled out Big Bertha...
And in a mere five minutes, my section was ready for planting. So I walked about in the deliciously cool, soft earth and marked out sections which will house zucchini, yellow squash, pumpkins, cucumbers (for Sean), carrots, cherry tomatoes and 2 types of lettuce.
As I planted the last of my seeds, the sky grew dark and opened up on us. We hurriedly finished the last of our work and headed home.
The sign of a good day of the work in the dirt:
Yum!
